The porch is starting to come together thanks to a few cans (actually a lot) of spray paint. Next in line to get painted were the wicker chairs. I’ve had these chairs for about 13 years and although I love them they are starting to show a lot of wear. A couple fresh coats of spray paint helped hide some of the wear and tear and I’ll hopefully get many more years out of them.
Wicker isn’t difficult to spray paint but it can be time consuming. You need to make sure you paint every area at every angle and just when you thought you got it all you see that you haven’t. Well, that’s what always happens to me anyway. I always start with painting the underside and back of projects. Why? Because it makes sense to me and if there’s any drips or runs they can be fixed easily. The chairs took 2 coats of paint.
I used Valspar paint and primer in one. The color is Encounter. Hmm, interesting name. I wonder how they came up with that? Anyway, when it says quick drying and no drips, it’s true. This paint goes on so smooth and I absolutely love it! My favorite part is that it’s quick drying. I’m one of those impatient painters. Valspar isn’t compensating me in any way, I just love this paint.
Oh my word! I’m really starting to love my colorful porch. There are still a few thing I need to do, like plant flowers in the pots, add a rug, cushions for the chairs, a new door mat and another little surprise (if it works). I’ve had these pillows so I want to use them, but I’ll probably be moving them around a bit. I’m not really happy with the look right now. Have you been working on sprucing up your outdoors?
During the month of April I posted a Spring Cleaning Serieson my Facebook page.
I shared one Spring cleaning chore each day through the whole month of April.
Some were more detailed than others but the idea was to get your house spic and span before Summer.
I had some requests for a30 Day Spring Cleaning Schedule Printable.
I finally made one. This is the schedule I went by on Facebook.
I hope you were able to follow along but, if not, this is for you.
Like I said, some of the cleaning was pretty detailed on Facebook.
If you have any questions or would like more details
you can either check out my Facebook page or leave a comment.
Once I get a few requests I’ll write up a blog post.
If I tried to write everything in one post it would be pages long and nobody wants to read all that.
How do you keep track of extra buttons for your clothes? I have a simple and inexpensive button organizing idea for you. I either use the packaging the button comes in or I use little zip lock bead bags from the craft store. I also label the bags with the name of the piece of clothing.
I do the same thing with extra thread that comes with the sweater to be able to repair it. I label the bags with the name of the person the clothing belongs to also.
Then I labeled each section with the color of the clothing. I bought the organizer at the dollar store and since it only had eight slots I doubled up on some of the colors.
If I loose a button it’s so easy to find the replacement by looking up the color of the piece of clothing. I go through the organizer about once a year and take out the buttons of clothing that have been donated or trashed.
This is how I store buttons that are used for crafting or new sewing projects. When a button is taken out of the organizer it goes here also.
Are you motivated to get your buttons organized now? Do you already have a system?
As I’ve mentioned before and probably will a million more times,I Love Spray Paint. This is what the bench looked like before. I’ve had this bench for 19 years and I love it! It started out white, then I painted it brown about 7 years ago. I was ready for a change again, something bright and happy for my front porch. As you can tell it should have been painted last year.
I had the green spray paint I wanted to use in my stash. It’s Pistachio by Valspar, but this is where it gets a little complicated. I only had 3 cans and one was only half full so I knew I needed 2 more. Instead of going to the store right then I started painting the bench (I’m kind of impatient) and got about halfway done with it. I went to Lowe’s to get more paint, picked up the can I thought was it by the lid color, then checked the color and it wasn’t the same. Ugh, it said Everglade Glen. I should have brought the lid with me, but I didn’t. I asked the sales associate to look up the old name but he said the color wasn’t even close to the same. I have color instinct and I just knew it was the same so I bought the 2 cans anyway. Guess what? Valspar (old) Pistachio and Everglade Glen are the same color. Hallelujah! I had bought the Pistachio 2 years ago and silly me didn’t even think about colors being retired. Luckily, they just renamed it. Moral of the story: don’t start painting something until you know you have enough paint or know that you can get more. Or follow your color instinct and know you have the same color in your hand and they just renamed it. Still no flowers in the pots.
Ammon and I decided to try out the newly painted bench with some yummy lemonade. I love trying out new lemonade flavors. I start with Crystal Light lemonade and add different sno-cone syrups. The syrup I added to this one is called Hawaiian, it’s a mixture of tropical fruits and is delicious.
Did you notice the pillows on the bench? They were purchased at JC Penney last year. They ended up costing me less than .50 cents for both. They were on clearance and I used a $10 off coupon. Pretty awesome deal! I love how the porch is coming together.
Can you guess what color I’m going to paint the chairs?
Spring always gets me in the mood to spray paint and by the looks of my front porch I need too. Can we say bland? How many shades of gray/brown can I have in one place? So over the next week or so I’m going to give my porch a color boost using very little money. You won’t even recognize it as the same porch when I’m finished.
I’ve talked about my spray paint stash in previous posts so I thought I’d share it with you again in case you missed it. See! I don’t hoard many things but I am a spray paint hoarder. Although I don’t know if it can be considered hoarding if I use it up and replace it.
Here’s the table before. I love it and I love all the intricate details but I don’t love the color. We place our drinks on it while we’re sitting on the porch and sometimes the kids play games on it. It’s been the perfect table other than the color.
I painted it Krylon Banner Red and now I love it! See what that little bit of color has done to the porch already? The pots help a lot too (they are from last year). I’ll be adding flowers to them later this week.
I also painted another little table. I forgot to get a before picture but it was about the same color as the first table. I painted the legs white. I didn’t care too much about over spray on the top since it was going to be painted another color.
I let it dry overnight then taped off the top of the table to be painted another color. I chose RustOleum Summer Squash for the top.
Pretty little table, don’t you think? It sits by the bench at the end of the porch, just another place to put cold drinks on a hot day.
Can you guess what colors I’m painting the bench and chairs?
The great think about the kits are that they come together really quickly. You can paint, stain, paper, glitter, or whatever you want. They would also make a great house warming or thank you gift, don’t you think? (My daughter made the square flag holder last year.)
I love the 4th of July mini stacker. The kit comes with 3 sanded pieces of wood measuring 5,6,and 7 inches in length and the vinyl lettering. I added scrapbook paper to one side and just painted the other sides.
I applied the scrapbook paper using mod podge to the back of the paper. I like to using a wallpaper seam roller to make sure the paper is flat and all the bubbles are out.
Then I sanded the edges to distress them a bit. I applied vinyl to both sides to make the stacker 2-sided so I can switch them whenever I want.
I like my bedroom but I also want to make a few changes so I’ll like it even more. I’m going to start small, mostly because I like instant gratification and sometimes just a little paint can make a big difference. It’s amazing how easy it is to transform lamps with spray paint.
I painted the lamps black a few years ago when my side table was green, now that it’s black I needed to change the lamps again and since I can’t afford to buy new ones paint was the answer. I also wanted to add another color to the room. As soon as I saw Bahama Sea by Krylon I knew it was the color I wanted. Pretty gorgeous, don’t ya think? Make sure to tape or cover all the areas you don’t want painted really well. I also tape off the top portion of the cord so it doesn’t accidentally get sprayed.
I love how even though they’re small they add a lot of color and brighten up the space. I’m also going to be painting a large piece of furniture the same color. It’s on the other side of the room.
This is my side table which I won’t be changing because I love it.
And this is hubby’s side table which I will be changing. I have so much yellowish wood in this room and I’m so over it. Hubby’s side table is going to be painted black to match mine (hopefully this week.) I’m going to make a few more changes to it also. I can’t wait to show you (and hubby, when he gets home.)
Now that the weather is nice I will be painting almost everything in sight.
I like to give my kids a little gift on the last day of school to welcome in Summer. Since school is coming to an end I thought I’d share some past last day of school gift ideas. I haven’t thought of one yet this year but since school is out in a few weeks, I better get started. Maybe these will give you some ideas.
I always attach a card or tag to the gift explaining what’s included in the basket. This explains the gift above.
Here’s another one.
And here’s the tag that was attached.
The kids always look forward to coming home to a little treat.
Do you give a small gift for the last day of school? Leave a link in the comments if you’d like to share.
I don’t have a lot of jewelry but I have enough to need to make another Hanging Jewelry Organizer. Not that I’m complaining. I like having my jewelry displayed, and it’s pretty and functional.
Here are the supplies you need for this project.
Size the metal to fit the frame you will be using. I bought the decorative metal sheet and frame at Hobby Lobby. I was able to get the frame for 80% off (I love the clearance area) and the metal for 40% off (with coupon).
Cut the metal sheet using aviation tin snips. This is super easy to cut, just be careful not to bend it. Another tip for this project: It’s best to cut off the trim from around the sheet before measuring . The solid area is hard to get staples through. I had a small bit of metal left over that I will be making something else with later.
Staple the metal to the back of the frame all the way around. I used a staple about every 2-3 inches. Staple on a hard surface and push down hard so the staples go all the way through.
I used 4 Command hook strips to secure the new organizer to the wall. I love not having to put holes in the wall.
I’m using 3/4″ S hooks to hang the jewelry from. The hooks didn’t fit through the holes easily so I had to bend one end out a bit. Hold one end with pliers (hubby’s rusty ones work fine) and place the other end in a tight area. I used a small hole in hubby’s work bench.
I pulled the hooks out just enough for them to fit in the holes on the metal sheet.
Who can resist displaying jewelry when it’s this pretty? You can check out other ways I organize my jewelry here.
I haven’t felt well for about 2 weeks, but I was able to work on my Spring Home Decor a bit. Be warned, there are a lot of faux plants. I know some of you are against them, but keeping indoor plants alive is not something I do well.
I reuse and repurpose things continually. The stacked silver stands were used for the Easter apothecary jars, just add lemons and it’s a fresh look. These bowls from West Elm are perfect for Spring and (cereal). Remember my idea on hiding outlets by using a tray? So, what do you think is behind the tray? Here’s a sneak peek at my back splash that’s still not finished. There was a small miscalculation that I’ll share with you when it’s complete.
More West Elm bowls and a West Elm tray. I might have an addiction! Um, and another look at the back splash that’s not supposed to be revealed yet. The tray also holds salt, pepper, and cloth napkins made from dollar store towels. I like using trays to contain a lot of small items.
I have a simple centerpiece for the dining table, painted Coke bottles filled with faux tulips inside a vintage cheese crate. I actually put real flowers in the Coke bottle vases about once a week. Can I just say I love my gray walls? Every time I see the walls in pictures I want to paint my whole house gray.
Yep, more faux greenery on the mirrored tray I made. I really like trays!
Green mossy balls in a pretty yellow bowl. I love the color green!
Some of these items I’ve had for over 10 years. By using them in different rooms and rotating them out for other seasons, they seem new every time I use them.
More faux greenery and another West Elm bowl. The West Elm items were purchased with a gift card and the other items were things I already had. Don’t get in a rut, move things around your house and make them feel new again. I’m hoping this week I’ll be able to get more projects done. I’m finally starting to get my energy back. What projects have you been working on?
