Weekend fun can get a little spendy. So I like to change it up and give myself a no spend weekend challenge every once in a while. At least once a month is a good idea for my family. Give your budget a break and try something new or finally finish something you’ve had on your to-do list.

No Spend Weekend hiking

Here are some ideas to get you started but I’m sure you’ll be able to think of more as you go along.

Go on a hike – Find a local trail and explore nature around your home.
Watch a new movie – If you have a streaming service watch a movie you haven’t seen yet.
Play board games – Games are great for family time and fun together.
Visit a park – Take snacks or a picnic to enjoy the whole day at the park.
Learn a new skill – Try something new you’ve been wanting to do for a while.
Camp in the back yard – If you’ve never camped in the backyard you have to give it a try. Kids love the experience.
Have a star gazing night – Download a free app and use your phone to find stars and planets. You can also make s’mores for a treat.
Visit a free museum – Some museums have free weekends. Find out which weekend is free and plan for that weekend.
Practice photography – Take photos of family, friends or nature. You can even plan a small family photo shoot.
Go thru old photos – Maybe now it’s time to finally get those old photos in order. And who doesn’t love going through old photos?
Bake something – Bake something together or have a family bake-off.
Read a book – Have a read-a-thon as a family and add treats because that makes everything even better.

Do something you’ve been putting off – Make time to do something you’ve been putting off. Now is the time!
Go window shopping – Go to your favorite area of town and do some window shopping and walk away without spending anything.
Clean out a closet – Have a family organization day and get some closets organized.

Attend a free local event – check for free local events and plan your weekend around something you’ll enjoy.

Try yoga or a new workout – Try a new exercise routine.
Do a puzzle – Make space on a table to work on a puzzle all weekend.
Make a new recipe – Create a new recipe using food in the pantry. You could make it a contest and then enjoy everyone’s creations.
Use any free coupons you have – If you’ve been collecting free coupons for food and events now is the time to use them.
Paint something – Use supplies you already have and plan an art class then display your creations.
Work on family history – Stories and photos about ancestors are enlightening and interesting. What a joy to learn about family.
