Dining Room Storage Solution
When we moved into our house I knew I wanted storage in the dining room. I originally wanted a long console cabinet but the window placement made it impossible. The best solution was two small cabinets that gave us the extra storage we needed. The storage space in these cabinets add up to the space in the console cabinet I wanted to purchase.
So why did we want addition storage in this space? Think of how you use a space and make it work for you and your family. We play games in this area and we needed a place to store additional party and entertaining supplies. This is a great solution. If you want to store entertaining and pretty decorative items open shelving would be a good option.
Look for solutions that take care of your storage needs. I need drawers and shelves to take care of our needs. When looking for furniture make sure it checks all your boxes and fits well with your design wants and needs.
This drawer holds party and specialty supplies that are needed a few times a year. The drawer is the right size to hold everything we need plus there’s a little extra space for new items.
The other drawer holds playing cards, small games, and a box of dice. Again there’s some open space for new items.
The shelves hold the games our family likes to play. We did a lot of editing to make sure we would have space for our most loved games. If we get a new game it either has to fit in this space or we need to get rid of one. That’s a great rule for any space to make sure it doesn’t become over crowded and cluttered.
The wall space on each side of the window is not the same but I placed the cabinets in a way that it tricks the eye so it seems balanced. The placement of the curtains and hung pictures also helps create an illusion of balance. I don’t think you would notice it’s not the same measurements unless I told you.
One of the drawers in this cabinet holds the tablecloths. I seldom use them except for when we have guests. And I make sure to get a fabric blend that doesn’t require much ironing, if any.
The other drawer holds clear vases that I also use for entertaining and guests. Again, store what you need but remember you probably don’t need as much as you think you do.
The top shelf in this cabinet holds placemats, which we use daily, and also table runners and pillow covers. The bottom shelf holds pitchers, dessert stands and cloth napkins. A lot of times I use the pitchers as vases or to hold cooking utensils.
The cabinets have given us the additional storage we need and an easy way to keep everything organized. I’m not going to lie, from a decorating perspective I also love what they add to the room. I’ve had these lamps for over 20 years and I love them in this space. They give us another option for lighting other than the overhead chandelier.
This was the first finished space in this house and it’s made it feel so homey and welcoming.
