Ammon is so proud of the tool box he built with a little help from his dad.
Ammon measured and marked the 1″ x 6″ board for his tool box. Did you know a 1″ x 6″ board actually measures 3/4″ x 5 1/2″ ? I’m sure you probably did but just in case you didn’t know, now you do.
Here are the sizes of boards you need if you’d like to help your cub scout build an awesome tool box.
Sides: 15 3/4 x 5 1/2 (2)
Ends: 11 1/2 x 5 1/2 (2)
Bottom: 14 1/2 x 5 1/2
We cut the top of the end boards on an angle, leaving room for the dowel in the middle. We marked 2″ in from each side and 3″ down from the top to form the angle and make the cuts.
All the pieces were put together using wood glue, then nailed into place using 1 1/2″ finishing nails.
Ammon hammered all the nails into place.
He loves hammering.
We used a 1″ dowel for the handle. Our miter box broke so Ammon sawed while his dad held the dowel still. The dowel should have been 15 3/4″ but it measured less than an 1/8 off, so make sure to measure the top of the tool box to get the right measurement.
We added glue to the ends of the dowel then used finish nails to hold it in place. Ammon is so excited about his tool box and so proud that he helped make it. He wants to make a birdhouse next.
