So much about saving money is being mindful about how you spend it. Here are some great ways to save money. Try a few of these ideas, make them habits, then try adding a few more.
Great Ways to Save Money
Have Two Grocery Lists – The first list is all the items you need for the up coming shopping trip. The second is a running list of pantry items and household supplies that you may need in the next month or so. Buy the second items only when they are on sale, then get enough to last for a few months.
Use Loyalty Cards – Most loyalty cards can be used as an app or accessed easily by a phone number. If you visit a store or merchant regularly take advantage of the discounts you are being offered.
Try New Store Brands – Grocery chains have house brand products that are almost always cheaper than name brand products. Compare ingredients and give them a try. Often the biggest difference is the cost and you might actually like them better.
Buy Gas at a Discount – Gas at Costco and Sam’s Club can be up to 25 cents a gallon cheaper. There are also discounts available at several grocery stores if you shop there often. There is also an app that will give you information on the cheapest gas in your area.
Free Car Battery Check – Most auto parts stores will check your battery for free and if you purchase one they’ll usually install it for free. Take advantage of the battery warranty, we have been able to receive free batteries because they haven’t lasted as long as the warranty. This happens often in the desert where we live.
Change Your Home Filters – You should replace your home filters at least every 3 months. This can save you money on your energy bill and it can prolong the life of your system. It also makes your home cleaner and it only takes about 5 minutes.
Compare Home and Auto Insurance – Purchasing both policies from a single provider can often save you money. Compare prices every few years to make sure you are still getting the best deal.
Do It Yourself – Many basic tasks are easy to do yourself with just a little knowledge and a few basic tools. Watch a video to gain the knowledge you need and have the confidence to complete the task. You will save a lot of money and learn a new skill.
Request a Lower Interest Rate – Call your credit card issuer and ask for a lower interest rate. There was a recent survey that says, 76 percent of cardholders were successful to lower their rate. What do you have to loose? They can just say no.
Put Up With Ads – Several streaming platforms recently started offering ad-supported membership options. You’ll pay a lower monthly price in exchange for having ads during your show. I can put up with a few ads to save money.
Use Your Library Card – Along with checking out books you can also have access to DVDs, free streaming services, and e-books. See what services are available at your local library and take advantage of them.
Buy It Used – You can often find used merchandise that looks new at a very discounted and reasonable price. Think cellphones, furniture, yard equipment, large tools, formal wear, etc. Check thrift stores and yard sales near you often for the best deals.
Free College Courses – Ask your local community college if they offer free or reduced tuition for older students. Sometimes you can also audit classes for free. A lot of evening college courses are offered at a very discounted rate.
Free Wardrobe Upgrade – Do you feel like you have enough clothes but nothing to wear? Consider hosting a clothing swap with 10-12 friends and get new clothes for free. You and your friends will have new clothing options without spending any money.
Swap Babysitting Services – Trade babysitting services with a friend that has children similar to the same age as yours. Your children can have playdates with friends while you can have some free time.
Free Local Activities – Most cities and towns have free activities and events for families. Check your local town hall or city website for free activities offered in your community. Parks, museums, concerts, festivals, and holiday celebrations are just a few ideas to get you started.
Use Cash Apps – My favorite is Fetch but I also like Ibotta. They’re easy to use and it’s free money for hardly any work. Since they’re purchases you’re going to make anyway it’s an added bonus. I turn mine in for gift cards at stores I shop in often.
Travel Costs – Travel can cost a lot and every little bit adds up. If you are flying try to purchase your ticket 15-30 days in advance. It’s usually more expensive the closer you get to your travel date. See if a travel agent can get you an even better discount on flights, lodging, rental cars and local activities.
No Spend Month – I usually do a No Spend Month at least once a year. It’s amazing what it will do to help you rethink your spending habits. Of course, don’t include food and monthly bills but everything else can be put on hold. I have decided not to purchase many things after thinking about it for a week or so.
Create a Budget – Creating a budget was the best thing I ever did to help me see where my money was going. It’s amazing what you can save once you know where your money is going and start making different spending decisions.
I hope these tips and ideas help you save money and put it where you really need it.
