Sunburst Mirror from a Candle Holder

I found this candle holder at Hobby Lobby for only $2. It reminded me of grass, so I thought I would bring it home, spray paint it green, add a glass vase to the middle, insert some lovely flowers, and put it in the middle of my table.

Then my son said something that changed all my plans. He was looking at it like this and said, “hey this looks like the sun.” So I took at look at it and decided to make it look even more like the sun.

Since the pieces were made of metal I carefully bent them down and made the candle holder flat.

The key word here is carefully. Apparently I wasn’t careful enough because I broke 1 totally off and made 2 really loose. I tried super glue but for some reason that didn’t want to hold in this area. Then I tried regular Gorilla glue and it worked after I held the piece up with a fork for about 2 hours.

I had the little mirrors leftover from the other sunburst mirror I made. I only put the mirrors on the end of the rays this time (mostly because that’s all I had).

I had to buy a 4″ mirror for the center but it was only $1. So the total cost for the mirror comes to $3.

I love the mirrors together. Now I need one more. I want it to be similar to both of them but different. Any suggestions?

What a clever idea!! Love the addition of the mirrors, too. Maybe make a smaller one out of different material? Wood?

WOW! You are just insanely creative. That’s the only way to describe it. I think it takes so much creativity and talent to look at an object not for what it is, but for what you could turn it into. Such a great idea! 🙂

How about making the third smaller and have the rays form a star shape… perhaps a compass star?

This is so creative! And it turned out so great! What a great idea!

Cute! I saw a sunburst mirror in the IKEA catalogue today. Even if you didn’t buy it, it could give you a third idea. It’s similar but different. 🙂

Family dollar has a starburst mirror for $10. It looks really similar to the one you made in this post, but maybe different enough? Here’s a link to what it looks like

what a neat idea! i’m glad there was only one small casualty, and i have to say…it looks better this way than as a candle holder! great idea!

This is a great project! I love it, except that I’d have to find a candle holder similar to this!

I really like the way you used the smaller mirrors at the tips of the rays, Leanne! Great job, and kudos to your son for great inspiration! I’m joining this “sunburst” bandwagon this week… you’ll never guess what my “mirror” is made out of! If you get a minute, check it out later this week. It should post Thursday or Friday! I’d love to know what you think!

Wow! How creative! I love turning things into something entirely new. The two of them do look great together and would look great with a third one. I would love it if you would stop by and link this up at the crafty link party going on right now at Lines Across My Face.
I hope to see you soon,
    Rachel.

I have always believed that if we listen to our kids and get inside their brains….life is better! Perfect example, and isn’t it nice to be able to brag about how brilliant your kids are! Thanks for sharing, this is great looking.

This is way too clever!! Love the two of them on the wall together. I’m thinking that since these two are more ‘spindly’ (is that a word??) that something more ‘substantial’ might look good. I remember seeing that someone made a sunburst mirror out of wood shims that looked amazing. Maybe google or check out Pinterest for ideas.

That is such a great idea! I need one more small starburst mirror for my wall of starbursts! I haven’t been able to find what I’m looking for but this gave me great inspiration and now many ideas are spinning around in my head! Thanks! ~ Barbara
