DIY Twist Ties

I saw some really cute twist ties at the craft store a while back. I thought they would be simple enough to make and it would be fun to customize them for gift giving and other craft projects. The DIY Twist Ties turned out great and I love the variety of styles and colors.

DIY Twist Ties are fun and easy to make and the perfect addition to small gifts

I gathered my supplies and got to work. I had everything on hand so they were free to make. That’s always an added bonus! You probably have most of the supplies too.

Supplies needed:
scrapbook paper scraps
wire (26 gauge wire)
double sided tape (tacky tape)
scissors or paper cutter
wire cutters

twist ties

This project is a great way to use up some of your paper scraps. Pick colors and patterns that match or coordinate with gifts or other paper products. Or pick your favorite papers to use in your own home. I cut each paper 4 3/4″ long and a little over 1/4″ wide. The next ones I make will probably be 6″ long to make them a bit easier to use.

twist ties1

I used 26 gauge wire and cut it a tiny bit shorter than the length of the paper. Any wire 24-28 gauge would work fine.

twist ties2

Stick the double sided tape to the back side of the paper and peel the protective cover off.

twist ties3

Then stick the wire to the tape. I used Terrifically Tacky Tape by Provo Craft. It’s very sticky and comes on a thin roll so it doesn’t have to be cut down the center.

twist ties4

Put the other paper on top and that’s it. You could also make some twist ties with different paper on each side so once it’s twisted you can see both patterns.

twist ties5

Aren’t they fun? I love how they turned out.

You can make them out of any paper for any occasion.

I’m going to be making dozens of these for gift giving. Are you going to try your hand at DIY twist ties?

Those are adorable! What’s the brand of tape you used? Did you have to cut the width to make it as thin as the paper strips or is it sold that thin?
    Thanks!
    Angie

Could this be done with fabric instead of paper so they could be reused more often? What brand of tape do you use?

  • Lorraine March 8, 2012, 4:44 am

    ingenious 🙂 Love this idea.

  • Gwen @ Gwenny Penny March 8, 2012, 5:38 am

Love this, Leanne! Also curious to know what kind of tape you used.

  • Anne McGuire March 8, 2012, 5:49 am

I thought it was fabric at first, great idea. I was wondering what kind of tape you used also.

  • leanneja March 8, 2012, 7:41 am

Oops! I guess I should have told you what tape I used. It’s called Terrifically Tacky Tape (on a roll) by Provo Craft. You can order it on-line or find it in almost any craft store. It comes that thin so it doesn’t have to be cut.

  • SueTiger March 22, 2012, 9:58 am

I am addicted to making these. I have a jar of about 200. They look so pretty sitting on my sewing table. I found it easier to cut 12″ strips 1/2″ wide and put the tape/wire on half and fold over. I then cut the strip into 3 4″ pieces.

  • Edna MacLeod March 22, 2012, 11:10 am

Have you tried fabric? It wouldn’t ripe like the paper and would be reuseable

  • Sharon December 28, 2012, 4:23 pm

    Sorry meant rip lol

  • Bina February 7, 2013, 1:03 am

These are so cute!! I’m going to try this with washi tape. I just got my hands on my first-ever washi tape.. There is none available in Pakistan so I got a friend to bring me some from the US 🙂 Cheers!

  • Jen V. July 13, 2016, 1:15 pm

I would have never thought of making my own zip ties. It would be fun to make some holiday themed ones for wrapping up plates of cookies to hand out at Christmas!

  • Jennifer Warren June 10, 2023, 8:12 am

Genius! You had me at “use up some of your paper scraps”! Thanks for the terrific idea! ⭐️❤️🥰

  • Pam June 15, 2023, 2:40 pm

Washi tape would work perfect too! Since much of the time it is waxy or coated, reusing it would work.

  • Evelyn September 4, 2023, 7:19 pm

I wonder if you could use material instead of paper
