I saw some really cute twist ties at the craft store a while back. I thought they would be simple enough to make and it would be fun to customize them for gift giving and other craft projects. The DIY Twist Ties turned out great and I love the variety of styles and colors.
I gathered my supplies and got to work. I had everything on hand so they were free to make. That’s always an added bonus! You probably have most of the supplies too.
Supplies needed:
scrapbook paper scraps
wire (26 gauge wire)
double sided tape (tacky tape)
scissors or paper cutter
wire cutters
This project is a great way to use up some of your paper scraps. Pick colors and patterns that match or coordinate with gifts or other paper products. Or pick your favorite papers to use in your own home. I cut each paper 4 3/4″ long and a little over 1/4″ wide. The next ones I make will probably be 6″ long to make them a bit easier to use.
I used 26 gauge wire and cut it a tiny bit shorter than the length of the paper. Any wire 24-28 gauge would work fine.
Stick the double sided tape to the back side of the paper and peel the protective cover off.
Then stick the wire to the tape. I used Terrifically Tacky Tape by Provo Craft. It’s very sticky and comes on a thin roll so it doesn’t have to be cut down the center.
Put the other paper on top and that’s it. You could also make some twist ties with different paper on each side so once it’s twisted you can see both patterns.
Aren’t they fun? I love how they turned out.
You can make them out of any paper for any occasion.
I’m going to be making dozens of these for gift giving. Are you going to try your hand at DIY twist ties?
Those are adorable!!! What a great idea!
I’d love to make some of those!
Suzanne
Those are adorable! What’s the brand of tape you used? Did you have to cut the width to make it as thin as the paper strips or is it sold that thin?
Thanks!
Angie
Could this be done with fabric instead of paper so they could be reused more often? What brand of tape do you use?
ingenious 🙂 Love this idea.
Love this, Leanne! Also curious to know what kind of tape you used.
I thought it was fabric at first, great idea. I was wondering what kind of tape you used also.
Oops! I guess I should have told you what tape I used. It’s called Terrifically Tacky Tape (on a roll) by Provo Craft. You can order it on-line or find it in almost any craft store. It comes that thin so it doesn’t have to be cut.
Really neat idea and I love the patterned paper you used. Thanks for the tutorial!
This is genius!!!! I love this!
Love, love, love this! Very smart and innovative! I love your choice of papers too. Really eye-catching!

I had no idea someone could make their own twisty ties. This opens up an entirely new world for me. 🙂 Planning my youngest son’s 2nd bday party and will use old kids BOOK PAGES as the paper for making twisty ties for the goody bags. Love it!
What a smart idea! A great way to use up little scraps up paper.
Love this idea! They are so cute and easy to make and I am always losing those darn things anyway!
What a fun idea! I think these might have to make it onto some goodie plates!
Brilliant! Sometimes the best (and cutest) ideas are the simplest. I’m totally doing this. (And pinning it 🙂

Love these! So cute.
These are fantastic! I use twist ties all the time and never once thought about making them myself. I’ll be making myself some cute ties. Thank you!
I am addicted to making these. I have a jar of about 200. They look so pretty sitting on my sewing table. I found it easier to cut 12″ strips 1/2″ wide and put the tape/wire on half and fold over. I then cut the strip into 3 4″ pieces.
Leanne…………Thank You for this “Awesome” idea……….I am going to use them for my Cake Bite Business as a way to advertise………Love it!
i was going through a braiding phase and i made something like this sometime ago except the ones i made were out of fabric and i used them to wrap the elastic on the end of my braids….
Oh my word, how clever are these?!?! Found you from Every Creative Endeavor.
OMG! This is so awesomely clever. I wonder if washi tape will work, also? Mahalo so much for sharing.

I’m visiting from 320*Sycamore. Thanks for editing your post to tell us about the tape you use. I’ve been using Scotch double-sided tape, and haven’t been happy with it. (Very UNsticky!) I’ll check this out. Cute idea!
I LOVE these. I use twist ties for so many different things. I can’t wait to make these. Thank you so much for the cute idea.
Oh, Lady! I can do this. Thanks for the idea and the instructions. You rock!
I love these! i had a go myself, pictures on my blog
Just saw these….so super cute!
Have you tried fabric? It wouldn’t ripe like the paper and would be reuseable
Sorry meant rip lol
These are so cute!! I’m going to try this with washi tape. I just got my hands on my first-ever washi tape.. There is none available in Pakistan so I got a friend to bring me some from the US 🙂 Cheers!
I would have never thought of making my own zip ties. It would be fun to make some holiday themed ones for wrapping up plates of cookies to hand out at Christmas!
Genius! You had me at “use up some of your paper scraps”! Thanks for the terrific idea! ⭐️❤️🥰
Washi tape would work perfect too! Since much of the time it is waxy or coated, reusing it would work.
I wonder if you could use material instead of paper
I’ve made these in the past with Cotton fabric ….bit more use of them than paper, but the paper ones are great too..😉
