Our December Bedtime Tradition

I promised you yesterday I would share our bedtime December tradition. We have a basket of Children Christmas books we’ve collected over the years. We read one each night in the month of December leading up to Christmas. Some of the books have several stories in them so we pick just one to read that evening. I’ve heard some of you have this same tradition and even wrap the books. If you wrap your books, you’re a saint. I don’t want to wrap anymore than I have too. Santa doesn’t even wrap gifts at our house.

This is our new book for this year, recommended by a neighbor.

This is my favorite childrens book we have. My kids like me to read the story every night. I think they take bets on how far I can get into the book without getting teary.

Ammon chose this book to read last night. It’s a cute book. Did you know Santa started out riding in a snowblower pulled by penguins and then moved onto a sleigh pulled by reindeer?

I love the idea of reading each night in December…things are soo crazy here…we prob couldnt do that…but including that into my advent calendar a few times this month is the next best thing…right?

We feed santa’s reindeer on Christmas eve. One year my kids made some ‘food’ at school and we have continued the tradition now for 3 years. Last year we didnt have any cookies for Santa…..so we all decided to bake him some Christmas eve at like 730 PM….nothing beats FRESH cookies for Santa….my kids have asked already if we are going to be baking him some more ‘FRESH’ cookies this year…so I see this becoming a tradition as well!!

I can’t wait to read what everyone else does…..Happy Holidays!!!

Love this idea! I don’t have kids, but when I do I want to read to them every night, as my parents did for me (and now I am a lover of books!) so this is perfect for Christmas!

We have a similar tradition for Christmas Eve where each person chooses one of their favorite stories and shares it with everyone. It’s always my favorite part of the holidays to find a story and hear the stories that everyone else finds, but I think I might be loving your idea of spreading it out during the month even more!
    Thanks for sharing!
P.S. My sisters and I are SO hooked on your blog! Love it! 🙂

    Hi Leanne,
I just discovered blogs recently and I really love yours. I was inspired to try and start one to show my friends and family some of my projects. I did the advent book thing this year for the first time and my 3-year old was thrilled to receive a new book last night…so thrilled that he woke up before I did this morning and unwrapped about 15 books….15 books I monogrammed with the days of the month. I know this will be funny one day…just not yet 🙂 Here is my version http://northernnest-lissa.blogspot.com/2010/11/christmas-book-count-down.html
    Happy Holidays!

what a wonderful idea… we have a couple of xmas books that our son likes to be read over and over but I never thought of wrapping them before… I will go find some used xmas books and do this. I’m sure our kids will love it and this keeps them from wanting to open the gifts under the tree

Oh, my gosh! I thought we were the only ones who did this!~ I collected kid’s Christmas books for years while our kids were little. Some years I could spend a couple dollars at Goodwill, others I splurged at Borders or B&N. I have quite a few of the $5 ones from Kohl’s, too. When my kids got old enough to read for themselves, I just sat the basket out next to a comfy chair with a lamp and it became a favorite thing for them to cozy up to a Christmas book – sometimes a couple of them reading together! So sweet, and yes, my kids are all really great readers now. (:

We have all of our Christmas books out too. I will have to look for that one I believe in Santa Clause. Looks good. We are doing a discussion topic advent calendar this year, but we have been reading Christmas books as well. It is a lovely tradition.

I’m so glad you linked this up! It always surprises me how many people don’t read to their kids.
