New Desk Area

This is my new desk area. I’d been wanting a look that was a little less crowded and since it’s in my bedroom I needed it to be less distracting, while I worked and also while I relaxed.

This is the before. See, a little overwhelming. I never thought of taking the roll-top off, duh! I just had to do it.

Here’s another great reason to take it off. Yep,  there’s a hole drilled in the top. Hubby was drilling a hole in the back of the desk to bring the computer power cord through but the roll-top was open so he drilled through the top too. Whoops!

Okay, I have to say Rebekah made it sound a lot easier than it was. The screws that held the top on were all buried, so I couldn’t get to them without taking the whole desk apart.

And I mean the whole desk. A project that I thought was only going to take about 20 minutes turned into almost 2 hours. And hubby had to help. Some of the wood was also glued on so we had to use a chisel to take it apart. Ugh!

After I finally got the top off I used gorilla glue and the screws and put everything back together.

It left a couple screw holes in the top of the desk, but I’ll just fill them in with wood filler. Once the weather warms up I’ll be painting it off-white. I can’t wait! While I was taking the desk apart I found out it is wood laminate in a lot of places. Does anyone know how I should go about painting laminate?

Now that the rolltop is gone I need a new place to store things. Do you remember the wonderful gift I got before Christmas from a secret friend? It’s the perfect thing to go above my desk.

I love my Pottery Barn shelf. I added a storage box to hold some of the things that were in the roll-top area.

Then I changed things around and cleaned up my shelves a bit.

And added another file basket under my desk.

Here’s before again. A little too crowded.

And here’s after. Much better!

Yes, I like it a lot. It has a pleasant retro look to me. I too work on a desk without enough storage for desk-type stuff. I’ll be taking some of your ideas. Thank you.

When we got our laptops our desk went out to the curb! I use a wooden file cabinet and matching 2 tier shelf(both on rollers) plus a skinnt wooden tray with a shelf to make up my “desk” now and it is nice.

What did you do with the roll top? And the drawer unit in the next to last picture?

I don’t have personal experience with painting laminate but I have read about Zinsser being wonderful for it. Here is a link by Kate@Centsational Girl. http://www.centsationalgirl.com/2010/04/go-right-ahead-and-paint-that-laminate/
