IKEA (part 2) Tray turned Message Chalkboard

You can read part 1 of the IKEA posts here. I also bought this awesome plastic tray for only $1.99! At first I thought I wanted to use it as a tray but the more I looked at it the more it looked like it would make an awesome chalkboard to use by the front door. I love the curvy sides.

I sprayed it with Rustoleum chalkboard paint using 3 light coats of paint. I love shiny black paint but I also love the matte look of the chalkboard paint.

I wanted to add some text so everyone would know it was a chalkboard and not just a big black tray hanging beside the front door. So I cut out the letters and arrow on my Cricut and attached them to the front/top of the tray.

I was having a hard time figuring out how to hang it. I can tell you what not to use. Do not use ribbon on the back attached with any glue, it just doesn’t work and it might come crashing to the ground. This is what I came up with. I used a command picture strip and a brass picture hanger. It’s still holding! You could probably drill holes in the plastic tray but I didn’t want too.

Next I primed the chalkboard by taking a piece of chalk on it’s side and rubbing it all over the board. Then wipe it clean with a damp cloth.

I hung it from a tiny nail I hammered into the stucco.

I think this is a cute way to leave messages to each other or if someone drops by they can leave a nice note for you. Can you see what I wrote on it? No Soliciting! I wonder if it will work.

I have 2 more IKEA projects coming your way. Don’t forget to take a look at the new 2013 catalog. I’ve been drooling over it.

Great and stylish idea. I had tried leaving a notepad and pen but that gets weathered. I think I will use your idea but I don”t have ledge for the chalk. I will have think of something else. Any ideas?
