I have partnered with Apartment Guide as an Official Apartment Guide Organizing Blogger.
This has been a great opportunity to be able to share budget-friendly and space-friendly tips, projects and ideas.

Whether you live in a home or an apartment we are all in search for more space, especially in our closets.
Having permanent shelving is not always possible, that’s why I love using portable shelving units.

I use them in my children’s closets to organize everything from clothing and shoes to toys.

I like adding storage totes to the shelves to contain smaller things.

But you can also leave some shelves open to hold larger items and even display items.

They can also be used instead of a dresser to hold clothing.
And what I like most about them is they can easily be moved to another location.
Either within your own home or if you move.

This unit sits next to my small desk to hold all the supplies and files I need close at hand.

Since I have a laundry closet instead of a laundry room I needed extra storage space.
These units are perfect to add that extra space above my washer and dryer.

my favorite organizing tip is to always store like with like and, as much as possible, to store things where you use them!

Anjanette March 26, 2012 at 5:00 pm

I keep my girl’s bobby pins in a magnetic paper clip holder.

Lisa Coniglio March 26, 2012 at 5:02 pm

Love baskets & repurposing boxes for storage!

Ginny @ Organizing Homelife March 26, 2012 at 5:06 pm

I LOVE how you organized your laundry space. I am all about labels and this looks fabulous!

Rachel B March 26, 2012 at 5:08 pm

I have about two feet of space between the ceiling and the tops of my kitchen cabinets. I have large baskets up there for extra storage. So I know what is in each basket without having to pull them all down, I keep a list taped into the inside of the door of the cabinet below each basket. :)

Kelly L March 26, 2012 at 5:10 pm

Once you bring it into the house, make sure you have a space for it – and put it there. Thanks!

Bitts March 26, 2012 at 5:20 pm

Get organizing supplies like containers, bins, & baskets at the Dollar Store. Spray paint, fabric, & pretty paper do wonders to transform that stuff into decor that matches yours!

Michelle K March 26, 2012 at 5:21 pm

I have two 3-drawer plastic units in my newborn’s closet and each drawer is labelled for a size of clothing. All the clothes up until 12 months have been washed, folded and placed in the appropriate drawers (we have a whole wardrobe from our first child). It’s great because her room is not really big enough for a full set of furniture and this leaves more space for her to play in the future.

Mami2jcn March 26, 2012 at 5:24 pm

I’m big on using bins and labeling everything.

Stephanie L March 26, 2012 at 5:27 pm

I’m slowly learning this organization thing! My favorite organizing gadget is my label-maker, by far – kitchen, Christmas storage, linens, you name it, I’ve labeled its box!

Catherine March 26, 2012 at 5:38 pm

Hmm…I’m still working on being organized, so I wouldn’t say I have an incredible tip. I guess have extra empty baskets just kinda hanging out around the house – - you can use them to hide the extras when guests are coming or to easily carry clutter from one room to the room it belongs in.

Thanks for the chance!

Maureen March 26, 2012 at 5:46 pm

One thing I try to do is to put the bottom sheet and the top sheet and one pillow case inside one of the other pillow cases–then you have the entire bed set together.

shirley l March 26, 2012 at 6:12 pm

My best tip is to purge regularly. At least twice a year I go through my cabinets and closets and get rid of everything I haven’t used since the last purge. It keeps my home from becoming cluttered and makes keeping my “stuff” organized easy!

Ashley H. March 26, 2012 at 6:30 pm

I like using shelves instead of a dresser to store clothes.

Ashley C March 26, 2012 at 6:34 pm

I love putting things into bins and using a label machine!!

demureprincess7(at)gmail(dot)com

Leigh March 26, 2012 at 6:49 pm

I like to store things by how often I use them. The more frequent, the easier to get to.

teri March 26, 2012 at 7:08 pm

My best tip is to get rid of as much stuff as possible, then store ‘like with like’ close to where you need it.

Ashley March 26, 2012 at 7:11 pm

Well, my husband will tell you that I am a list maker (he thinks I have lists for my lists). But other than lists to keep me organized I have a slight obsession with bins/baskets. It makes things so much easier when everything has a nice little place to hide away. And it’s also nice that you can teach your 2 year old which toy goes where and he organizes them correctly. Yep, I’m raising an OCD child. ;)

Gina March 26, 2012 at 7:12 pm

i love baskets to organize things with. I never label them – I want to change them out as the mood strikes (:

Melissa J. March 26, 2012 at 7:23 pm

I’m working on getting organized, my favorite tip is to donate or sell the items that I’m not in love with to keep clutter at bay.

Natalie :) March 26, 2012 at 8:02 pm

I love the tags in the laundry Tom it looks so nice :)

Michelle J. March 26, 2012 at 8:40 pm

I keep a small basket by the stairs for toys that belong in the kids’ rooms upstairs. It makes it easier for them to clean up their toys and put them all away.

Jessie C. March 26, 2012 at 9:22 pm

I like using baskets and labels to organize.

NaDell March 26, 2012 at 9:55 pm

My favorite organizing tip is to make school lunches the night before and have everything ready to go for the next day with folders in the backpacks so we are ready to go out the door (even if we wake up late.)

Erica March 26, 2012 at 10:11 pm

I’m still working on organizing our house – it’s expensive to do all at once! But I like the thought of using bins and smaller containers for sorting so you can maximize space. I just did our master bathroom and I love it – next weekend it’s my craft/sewing closet!

April G March 26, 2012 at 10:17 pm

My tip is to get creative with corners! You can find shelves and furniture shaped specifically for corners. No wasted space!

Edie S March 26, 2012 at 10:43 pm

Label everything with a cute but functional label! :)

Jessica F March 26, 2012 at 11:49 pm

my favorite organizing tip is to clean out clothes often! I start the year by facing hangers one way… after I wear the shirt/dress and wash it, I’ll turn around the hanger. Whatever still has the original hanger position gets donated the next year.

Andi March 27, 2012 at 2:36 am

My favorite organizing tip is to make things pretty, then you are more likely to keep them that way.

Alli March 27, 2012 at 6:02 am

Baskets are a great way to keep hands and paws out of cleaning chemicals and prevent unnecessary messes! Love your idea!

the cape on the corner March 27, 2012 at 6:14 am

i just reorganized my closet where i keep all my decorative stuff and candles, etc. i have found that taking things out of the boxes they came in really frees up space. thanks for offering this!

MacKenzie March 27, 2012 at 6:48 am

With organizing the best thing I ever did with organizing is to put a full size armoire in my dining area (directly off my kitchen) and use this to free up some of my kitchen cabinet space! I live in a apartment so this space is much needed! I used the clothes hanging bar by putting in some decorative shower hooks and hung all of my pots and colanders- this even left enough room for a dish rack below for the p0t lids! then the two drawers underneath hold baking supplies and pans and there is one more shelf in there that holds all of my glass bowls and corningware! I even have extra cabinets in the kitchen now! yes in a apartment!!! Also, I never have to dig for a pot i open the doors and they are all hanging in plain view!!! Sometimes i open it just to look b/c i love it so much lol!

Christa March 27, 2012 at 8:05 am

My favorite organizing tip is a tip from my mother and she probably got it from her mother and so on. I’ve heard it often from others too and it’s the only way to keep my house in order.
A Place For Everything And Everything In Its Place

SalBug March 27, 2012 at 9:04 am

Never leave a room without taking something with you that doesn’t belong there and put it away right then. Works like a charm, although sometimes my arms are full and I have to go to several rooms to put things where they belong!!!

Juliana W. March 27, 2012 at 9:55 am

My Favorite organizing tip is to store the flat sheet, fitted sheet IN a pillow case. That way when you need it it is easy to grab!

Wendy T March 27, 2012 at 10:53 am

My favorite tip is to just do a bit of organizing each day. When I look at all that I need organized/straightened, it can be overwhelming.

If I do 15 minutes of work when I think I “can’t”, quite a bit gets accomplished by the end of the week.

Kelly D March 27, 2012 at 11:27 am

My organzing tip is to donate any items you haven’t used in the past year, and this will greatly reduce clutter.

L. March 27, 2012 at 12:15 pm

I love baskets!

saminder gumer March 27, 2012 at 12:38 pm

my favorite organizing tip is to use suitcases as places to keep winter clothes to save space.

Charity S March 27, 2012 at 12:39 pm

I love to use bins in organizing my house.

Laura Royal March 27, 2012 at 1:06 pm

I like using clear bins to organize things!

Jessica March 27, 2012 at 2:24 pm

For some reason I always forget about stacking up in small spaces. I love your blog and it always inspires me to stack my layers and shelves up in my small closets.

Jessica @ Stay at Home-ista March 27, 2012 at 3:22 pm

I try to assign one shel per bedroom in the linen closet so sheets don’t get mixed up.

Gina M Maddox March 27, 2012 at 5:10 pm

Whenever you take something out, make sure to put it back! ;-)

Labels! And constantly purging stuff that my little girl grows out of.

Tristan Schlegel March 27, 2012 at 7:21 pm

Bins. Bins. Bins! I have them everywhere in my house. And I love labeling. Organization gets me giddy!

Camille March 27, 2012 at 7:40 pm

Bins with labels, making lists, purging often.

Mary March 27, 2012 at 7:53 pm

When you go from room to room in your daily routine, pick something up and drop it off in it’s proper location on you way to the next task. So yes your essentially “cleaning” all day but it doesn’t feel like it because it just takes an extra minute or two.

Sara T March 27, 2012 at 9:31 pm

Do a small load of laundry every day, so you don’t get overwhelmed.

Rebecca March 28, 2012 at 5:15 am

I have a basket for each child to dump his/her lunch box, backpack, papers, etc. in when they get home each day. They are labeled with a little chalkboard with each child’s name on it. It works good because both the children and myself know where to find their stuff – even my 19 month old son!

linda brooks March 28, 2012 at 5:45 am

Ater each weather change I always clean out closets and dressers, and put clothes up till we need them again.

Stephanie March 28, 2012 at 8:01 am

I love labeling and making a spot for everything. If everything has a spot, its easy to put everything away. I also like to take 5 minutes before I got to bed to sweep and clean counters! That lil bit of time each night makes the house feel organized to me!

laura March 28, 2012 at 8:43 am

Everyone has their own bin at the back door to dump all their stuff. It makes it so much easier when they each have a place for their incoming things.

RegRache March 28, 2012 at 9:07 am

Have a place for everything & keep it there…also purge!

rosemariee March 28, 2012 at 9:24 am

i love the idea of square baskets to store various things!

Jackie F March 28, 2012 at 11:30 am

I love having baskets to store alike items throughout the house. It gives everything we have a place and less time wasted looking for lost items.

Susan Gerrard March 28, 2012 at 1:23 pm

One of the organizing tips I like is to put a matching sheets set in one of the set’s pillowcases.

Denise K. March 28, 2012 at 1:36 pm

I love the Rubbermaid plastic containers. They are clear so I can easily see what is inside, and they keep my dry goods in the pantry organized and looking good.

Kyra March 28, 2012 at 2:01 pm

Get rid of things, then you’ll have less to organize!

Crystal March 28, 2012 at 2:58 pm

I’m not a great organizer, but I’m getting better! One tip I picked up from Pinterest is to use a picture frame (minus the glass) to frame a pretty piece of lace, and use it to organize your dangly earrings! It keeps them easy to find, and almost becomes a work of art in itself!

Faith March 28, 2012 at 5:25 pm

Only keep what you use, love and think is beautiful! Get rid of everything else. It will make your home easier to organize with less clutter!

Crystal March 28, 2012 at 6:16 pm

My favorite tip is going as high as I can against the wall. Our apartment is tiny so we have lots of tall shelves to utilize as much wall space as possible, freeing up floor space at the same time!

anna pry March 28, 2012 at 6:27 pm

Less is More! throw out, sell or donate as much stuff as you possibly can so you have less to clean and organize

Traci Rochon March 29, 2012 at 6:51 am

I love portable shelving and totes for playrooms. Especially because your toy needs can change.

Amy March 29, 2012 at 7:00 am

Keeping cleaning supplies where you use them, even if it means purchasing multiple bottles, makes things faster and easier when cleaning up.

julianne March 29, 2012 at 9:24 am

I like plastic totes and to make sure everything has a label!

julianne March 29, 2012 at 9:24 am

I like them on facebook!

julianne March 29, 2012 at 9:24 am

I liked them on twitter!

Kelly March 29, 2012 at 10:39 am

Use baskets for all the little things that don’t belong elsewhere!

AnnF March 29, 2012 at 10:46 am

Binders are one of my favorite tools! Baskets come in a close second.

Katie March 29, 2012 at 12:24 pm

Drawer organizers!! I scored a bunch of great ones, all different sizes at The Dollar Store and use them all over the house!

Amanda Ryan March 29, 2012 at 12:51 pm

Containerize! and lable! those are my two favorite organizing tips. Things are just so much easier to find/put away and look so much more organized when you containerize! and labling of course gets things back into the right container!

Julie March 29, 2012 at 1:13 pm

I arrange my closest putting dresses, skirts, together use a shoe rack use plastic containers with wheels on them
to store items I don’tneed

like AG on fb Julie A Scott Laws thanks

Michelle Balletti March 29, 2012 at 5:43 pm

My best organizing tip….I learned this one from someone on Pinterest….at the beginning of the year, have your hangers facing the opposite direction….as you wash your clothes and re-hang them, hang them the “right way” and at the end of the year, those on the hanger still in the opposite direction, donate them since you haven’t worn them in a year. Since I’m the one that does the laundry, I’ll be able to see what we haven’t worn….thanks for the great giveaway!!

Heidi March 29, 2012 at 7:10 pm

Go through your mail right when it comes in, recycle the junk mail (which is most of it) then file the important mail in their appropriate files.

Debbie March 29, 2012 at 7:31 pm

Purge before organizing! I find it is easier to organize the less stuff you have.

Leyna March 29, 2012 at 11:20 pm

Don’t throw away items with organizing potential! Designate an out-of-the-way spot (under the bed, for example) to save things like shoe boxes, the bottoms of (clean) cracker boxes, empty checkbook boxes, etc. Then challenge yourself to USE the (free!) containers you’ve saved. If it’s a big box, cover it with cool fabric and throw some Legos in. If it’s a lot of little boxes, play Tetris and fit them into your junk drawer and finally get things sorted/organized/purged. There’s something to be said for taking it one or two little containers at a time–it feels a lot less daunting to pick 1 type of thing from the pile (twisty ties from the bread! rubberbands!) to containerize than to look at a huge junk drawer mess and feel like you have to find a place for everything. Pick 1 thing and, soon enough, it’ll all be sorted!

Jess March 30, 2012 at 6:47 am

I like to keep my closet organized by hanging like things together … long sleeve button downs in on section, plain ts together in another, cardigans together, etc. And if I’m really feeling crazy, maybe even color -coded :)
It makes me happy knowing I can quickly find what I need!

Tabathia B March 30, 2012 at 7:58 am

I love the idea that if you have a lot of shoes of either keeping them in their original box and storing them at the bottom of the closet or getting the clear plastic storage boxes and labeling them and keeping them at the bottom of the closet to keep shoes organized and from becoming crushed
tbarrettno1 at gmail dot com

Harmony B March 30, 2012 at 8:40 am

when able organize stuff by date …if its to old get rid of it

Denise L March 30, 2012 at 10:42 am

One problem I have with organizing is that I have too much stuff! So I (indavertantly) got on a charity’s phone list. They have pickups in my neighborhood every 2-3 weeks. I keep a charity box handy and put things in there as I come across them. It’s very easy to do and I don’t have to feel pressure to go through some huge purge. It’s much easier to organize when I’m left with only what we truly want/need.

kjasus March 30, 2012 at 6:31 pm

i love organizing my closet by color. it is appealing and easy to find things
