Through the month of April I shared a 30 Day Spring Cleaning Schedule on the Organize & Decorate Everything facebook page. I’ve had a few questions from readers about sharing more details of a few of the chores I outlined. If you haven’t cleaned your mattresses recently, now would be a great time.

cleaning and refreshing your mattress 4.1

We don’t have to go into all the details about the microscopic things that can live on your mattress and I don’t dwell on it too much, but every time I change the sheets on the beds I think about it and remember it’s probably time to vacuum them again. Wash your bedding in the hottest possible setting they allow. I also take off the bed skirt and throw it in the wash. And when was the last time you washed your pillows? You should wash your pillows at least once a year, twice would be better. Most can be washed. Follow the manufacturer directions. Mattress covers and pillow covers should be washed once a month. I take my bed covers to the laundry and use the big machines that can handle my king size bedding (usually once or twice a year).

Now let’s get to the mattress! Take the mattress off the bed to vacuum the top of the box springs, sides, bed rails and other parts that are hard to get to with the mattress on. I also wash the wall and baseboards behind the bed and vacuum under the bed. If your mattress can be flipped vacuum the side of the mattress that is going to be down and put mattress back in place. Some mattresses are not meant to be flipped so you can just skip that step.

I use a sifter and sprinkle about 1 1/2 cups of baking soda on the top of the mattress. Then go do something else for an hour or start working on another mattress in the house. The baking soda helps draw any moisture out of the mattress, deodorizes it, and leaves it smelling fresh. You can also add a few drops of lavender essential oils to the baking soda if you like.

After an hour or so use a vacuum attachment to vacuum up the baking soda and those yucky microscopic critters we were talking about earlier. I use an upholstery attachment for the top and the crevice attachment for the seams and sides of the mattress.

mattress 2.1

I like to use a lavender spray on the mattress after cleaning it well. This one is from Bath and Body Works. I love the smell and it’s so relaxing. I love slipping into my bed after deep cleaning it. How did I ever sleep well on a dusty bed? I also like to spray my pillow a couple times a week with the lavender spray. It’s so relaxing!

I spot clean the throw pillows on my bed when needed. I dust them a couple times a year by tossing a few of them in the dryer on a low setting for a few minutes. Um, I also like to spray lavender on them from time to time. When was the last time you cleaned your mattress?

Great tips! I love the idea of spraying lavendar on the mattress…Maybe I’ll do that to my son’s. He has issues sleeping, and maybe that will calm him down :)
