A Rented Dress

Amanda went to her first high school dance tonight. Because of our financial situation right now we weren’t able to buy her a dress. We were able to rent one from a cute girl in the neighborhood, but needed to make it more Amanda’s style. We made changes to the dress that would be easily changed back.

The first thing I did was add a flower to the sash. We choose brown because Amanda’s wearing pink and brown vans to the dance. She definitely has a style all her own.

I took the flower apart and took the center out.

Then added a pearly scrapbook embellishment. I added a hair clip on the back so it could be easily removed and used on something else later.

Amanda loves the flower and I think it looks great on the sash.

I needed to make the straps thicker on the dress. Just remember I’m not a seamstress and it had to be a temporary solution.

So I bought some white satin fabric.

And sewed it into 2 tubes, ironed the seams flat, turned them right side out.

And hand stitched the fabric to the dress gathering it a little as I stitched. Here’s the front.

And here’s the back. The changes I made to the dress will be easy to change back before it’s returned.

I made her date’s boutonniere using artificial flowers and greenery, then I added a pink ribbon to match her dress.

It looks so much more like Amanda’s style now. Do you see the shoes? I’ll have more pictures later. This dance and Chinese New Year celebrations pretty much took over my life this last week.

Hope you’re all having a Wonderful Weekend!

Now that is adorable – the changes you made really make the dress different enough, yet are easily returnable…. I just think that years from now she will never remember that the dress was “rented”, and will only remember the love you put into it, in order to make it HERS. You rock!

Wonderful! What a lucky girl. Necessity is the mother of invention. I grew up in a single parent family. My dear mom didn’t have a creative bone in her body. That served me well. I learned to be creative and now it’s part of my life. I know your daughter must appreciate what a wonderful mother you are. Great job.

Looks great! I love that a few simple changes made it her own style. My daughters are still in elementary school but they are why I started sewing again, to help them express their own style! domesticdeadline.blogspot.com

that is great, you were really able to make it something she’d be more comfortable wearing. great for you, and for her!

It looks perfect! You did great. And honestly, she’d probably never wear it again if you did buy it ;-P

I hope she had fun, she looks beautiful.

What a wonderful job! I thought I had the only teen who wore those shoes with a dress… So glad I am not alone. She looks beautiful!

I think “renting” is such a GREAT idea. They never wear the dress more then once anyways!

That looks fantastic! You would never know that you had altered it. Good job. You know not only is it economic but it is eco friendly too. So she was very trendy in many ways for her dance!

I hope she had a great time. The dress turned out really cute. I thought you said you couldn’t sew.

very clever! she looks just lovely!

I once lent out my wedding dress to a college gal who was in our campus ministry group. I figured, why not -I knew I’d never wear it again and she was so happy not to have to wear a long-sleeved hand-me-down from her aunt (especially for an august wedding!)

now, my first born (a five year old boy) says he wants the girl he marries to wear my dress – HA! I told him that was very sweet, but don’t count on it. :)
