Valentine’s Day Placemat Pillows

January 12th, 2010

I think I’m addicted to looking for placemats I can turn into pillows. They’re just so easy and turn out so cute, I can’t help it. I found these placemats at Target in the dollar section that also has things for $2.50 now. These were $2.50 each.

I really liked them, but I needed to add something. I decided two love birds would be perfect for Valentine’s Day. I went to my Cricut and picked the picture and size I wanted for the pillow, then I had it cut out on cardstock. I picked the fabric I wanted and then ironed the adhesive on the back side of the fabric (2-3 seconds in each place).

I took the bird cut out and traced it on the adhesive. First going one direction and then the other, so they’ll be facing each other on the pillow.

Now it’s time to cut them out.

SS850240

Peel the paper backing off the back of the fabric and lay the birds on the placemat where you like. Iron down for 8-10 seconds.

Add buttons or other embellishments if you’d like. I added buttons for the eyes and sewed buttons on the corners of the soon to be pillow. You’ll need to rip open a seam area at this time, if you’re going to sew buttons on. I ripped open a few inches at the bottom of the placemat (pillow).

I made another one in the same way, but  made a heart instead, and added buttons all over the heart.

SS850154

Now just stuff and sew the seam closed (or you could use fabric glue if you’d like).

SS850252

I like my pillows pretty full.

SS850256

I haven’t sewn this one shut yet, because I ran out of stuffing. It was midnight, so that will have to be finished today.

I think I’ll put them in the Loft for the kids.

I found some Christmas placemats to make pillows out of for gifts next year. Thanks for the great ideas!
I saw somewhere that people use bias tape or ribbon to sew across the top of a placemat to make an apron, so I think I’ll make a few of those too.
Once our pillows on our bed get mashed, I wash the pillows in the washing machine and use the stuffing to stuff decorative pillows.
