Thankful Jar

November 7th, 2009

Every year we try to do a project in November that helps our family remember what we’re thankful for and all the blessings we have. Last year we made pillowcases and wrote or drew pictures of what we were thankful for with fabric paint markers. The kids saw their pillowcases every night at bedtime and were reminded of their blessings.

This year we made a “Thankful Jar”. In it we have strips of paper that have written on them what we’re thankful for and an action that goes along with it. Each day the kids take turns pulling a piece of paper out of the jar and then we do what it says on the paper.  For example, ours today said, I’m thankful for my ears…… listen to good music. We listened to Kenny Loggins, Return to Pooh Corner.

I typed the blessings up, cut them in strips and wrapped them around a pencil to make them curly and fit in the jar better. If you’d like a premade list of blessings go over to Somewhat Simple. She has a whole list you can just print out from your computer.

To decorate the jar, I cut and put scrapbook paper on the inside. I painted the jar lid and ring black and the metal flower on top white and glued the flower on.

I then added the tag that says “I’m thankful”.

We’ve been able to talk about different things we’re thankful for and do things together as a family. I enjoy this much better than just saying what we’re thankful for on Thanksgiving day. I hope this helps my kids realize all the blessing we have and how we need to show our gratitude. Have a beautiful weekend!

And it’s my beautiful sister’s birthday today too. Happy Birthday Melissa! I love you and your family. I hope you like your present.

What a cute idea! We do a tree of thanks with leaves that we paste on the tree, but I love the jar idea, too!
