Decorating the Top of the Kitchen Cabinets

July 12th, 2010

Or maybe I should call this undecorating the top of the kitchen cabinets. As usual, I forgot to take a picture of the top of the cabinets before, but this is all the stuff that was up there. I get a thought in my head and I just start doing it, remembering to take pictures later. I’ll try to be better about that. Most of the items are pretty dark and I wanted to lighten things up a bit.

I’ve been storing all my drink dispensers and dessert stands in the mudroom on a shelf. I have to use a stool to get to them either place so I thought why not move them here to lighten up the space above the cabinets.

The cabinets are varying heights so I experimented with the stands in different places.

I put the drink dispenser on the easiest cabinet top to get to because we use it the most often.

Here’s the cabinets above the stove.

This cabinet is on the other wall. I put the white milk glass footed bowl on top of a cake plate to give it more height.

Here’s a look at most of the kitchen cabinets. I love how much lighter and open the top looks now. Hubby even noticed the change as soon as he came home from work. And hubby doesn’t notice much when it comes to decorating, so I’m thinking it’s a good change.

oh yes, i like this change. it is definitely lighter and airy, but the collection looks more purposeful, rather than trying to fill a space. does that make sense? nice job! and glad hubby noticed, too!

I like it! I use the tops of my cabinets for my clear and white serving pieces too. I don’t have a lot of storage space and they get showcased this way. :) Thanks for the visit!

I use the top of my kitchen cabinets to put my antique canning jars and my collection of tea pots. On top of my china cabinet I have a beehive birdhouse made of straw, twigs, and I perched a bird ontop of it. Then I have a green sleigh from hallmark clearance that has a bird perched at the side of the sleigh. As you can see I collect bird houses, barn pictures, tea pots, and anything I like with antiques. I thought that maybe your three cake dishes above the stove might look better with graduated small ,med., and large to carry a persons eyes across the cabinets. Great job

I really need to change my cabinets too! I might just have to steal your idea! I see some re-decorating…again…in my very near future!
    Thanks for the inspiration!

We have really been thinking about decluttering the top of the cabinets. I like your idea about using lighter colored items to help brighten things up.
